Vanessa Silvestre Paulo

Vanessa Silvestre Paulo (b.1982, Portugal) practice investigates questions of proximity and distance through photography. She is guided by an interest in notions of looking, in the history and indexes of the photographic medium and its relationship to seeing through or beyond our own eye. The work references early scientific methodologies whilst generating new ways of considering photography with a special relation with the photographic grain. She explores natural phenomenas, the qualities of organic form and our relationship to the natural world. It draws analogies: it is about analogue processes, the indexical, but also highlights the capacity to produce associations of thoughts that rely on analogical thinking.
