“When in 2009 we acquired the houses, part of a row of twenty homes in the Bom Sucesso development in Óbidos, we admired the line of poplar trees that stretched along the entire length of the houses. We did not imagine, however, that over time these trees would develop such extensive and vigorous roots, invariably oriented toward the deeper parts of the houses, where the water pipes run. It can also be observed that in the houses in front of which the trees have more robust roots, the hydrangeas in the gardens are less developed and almost never bloom. To this day, we do not know whether there has ever been any encounter between the pipes and the roots. But at the surface, we remain beneath the shade of their canopies, lulled by the sound of the wind in the leaves.”
