This book presents a visual exploration of the Islamic community of Tapada das Mercês in Sintra, Portugal, through documentary photography initiated in 2021. The photographs capture the essence of the community’s vibrant religious celebrations. Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha, the two biggest festivities in the Islamic calendar, are celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Muslim community of Tapada das Mercês. Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, while Eid ul-Adha commemorates the willingness of the prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in obedience to God. Eid Mubarak is an Arabic term meaning “Blessed Feast” and is used by Muslims worldwide as a greeting in these celebrations. This publication celebrates and pays tribute to the Muslim community of Tapada das Mercês for its example of unity, strength, resilience, and faith. The sequence of images was designed to be read from front to back and also in reverse, as this is how books in Arabic are read.
