I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now is a performance by João Fiadeiro. It was premiered in October 1997 at the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse (FIND) in Montreal, Canada. It is based on the sound piece I am sitting in a room created in 1969 by Alvin Lucier. On stage, Fiadeiro uses a Xerox machine to reproduce his face. By using different scales and copying the successive copies, the original picture loses progressively its definition. Alvin Lucier’s sound piece serves as conceptual platform and sound landscape to make explicit and assertive the position Fiadeiro wants to explore. Namely the relationship between repetition and difference or the way how, without subterfuges or effects, the performance does exactly what it says: “I am sitting in a room...”
